Lunch time recess fun
Hello Beach Families and Friends! We have a great need for adult supervision (most specifically during the 11:20-12:00 recess time) at recess! We would very much appreciate any help that could be provided. Duties would include supervising games and free play activities, helping to resolve conflicts as well as general scanning and supporting staff in any way necessary. Please check-in in the office when you arrive and you will be directed to the appropriate staff member on the playground. Thank you so much for your willingness to help out!
Fundraising to support Beach
We have several fundraising events during the year and would love to have you join us! The school auction is our most important fundraiser. It’s a huge party and tons of fun, but needs many volunteers to make it great. Lots more information is at our Fundraising Page. Contact our Fundraising Chair for more info: Alisa Hayes email@example.com.
Our awesome school librarian Mrs. Frazee firstname.lastname@example.org always needs help in the library. This involves checking in/out books, shelving, helping students, book repairs, and special projects. She can also use help with book fairs, Battle of the Books, Dr. Seuss’s birthday and other special events that promote literacy. Click here for the Library Volunteer Interest Form.
Volunteering in your child’s classroom
This includes helping with instruction, tidying up after messy projects, chaperoning class field trips, being a “room parent,” and more. Just ask your child’s teacher what you can do to help. See the Beach Staff List for your teacher’s contact information.
School Office Help
Contact Secretary Toni email@example.com to help with the ongoing need for help copying material for teachers, laminating, sorting and distributing materials. Our secretaries and teachers will sing your praises every time you show up.
School grounds improvement
There’s lots of opportunities to clean up and improve our school grounds.
- Beach PTA sponsors several fall and spring school ground clean up days, as well as school ground improvements (e.g., adding bioswales, picnic tables, benches, and playground equipment). Contact Rachel Wood Massey firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to help.
- With your help we can improve our athletic fields by working with Portland Public School and Portland Parks and Recreation. Contact Suzanne email@example.com to help.
Your PTA sponsors several free family events during the year and can always use some assistance at each event. These include the Fall Harvest Festival, Pottery Painting Night, Holiday Cookie Decorating, Bingo Night, and the Family Field Day. If you would like assist with these events or have any questions, please contact PTA President Stephanie Lawrow (firstname.lastname@example.org)
This wonderful program helps our kids learn how to have fun with energetic, safe, and inclusive playtime during recess and after school on the playground. Students learn to run their own games and settle disputes quickly because getting along is more fun than fighting. The end result is our kids play hard, cheer loud, and high five with joy. And they create and carry that feeling of peace and belonging with them into their classrooms. Our teachers tell us this program has dramatically reduced recess and classroom discipline problems. Contact Coach Max email@example.com if you’d like to assist with Playwork classes.
Start Making A Reader Today (SMART)
SMART is a reading program that pairs community volunteers with kindergarten and 1st grade students to read one-on-one for 20 – 25 minutes twice a week (students come twice a week, volunteers come once a week – each student has two volunteers). SMART goals are to have students gain confidence in their reading abilities and to discover a love of reading. Each student also receives 2 books a month to take home and keep!
SMART operates at Beach School on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers commit to one hour a week either on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 12:15 to 1:15 or 1:30 to 2:30. Each volunteer is paired with two students and the volunteer reads with these same two students throughout the school year (SMART operates mid-October to mid-May). All the volunteers and students are in the same room (this year #112) and have many books available to select from for their reading times.
All volunteers must apply with SMART and have a background check run. Here’s the link for the online application – https://www.getsmartoregon.org/get-involved/volunteer/volunteer-form/ Please indicate that you want to volunteer at Beach. Once you are approved the site coordinator will get your name and contact you with your preferred time to volunteer based on openings at that time.
You can get more info about the SMART program by sending a message to firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 971.634.1906.
